GORILLAZ FONT DESIGN
This project involved designing a custom typeface inspired by the work of a chosen musician, author, or artist, and applying the finished typeface to a selected medium. I chose the band Gorillaz as my creative influence. As one of the first bands I connected with as a teenager, their unique identity—presenting themselves through animated characters rather than their real-life personas—left a lasting impression on me.
The four animated band members each had distinct silhouettes, with gorilla-like facial features and elongated lower bodies. I translated these visual traits into the design of my typeface, emphasizing height and asymmetry. Varying angles in the ascenders and descenders reflect the individuality and diversity of the characters, capturing the playful and unconventional spirit of the Gorillaz.
